Dean Wilson, current President, has been a long-time member of the organization from Randleman, NC. He is a 3rd generation assisted living facility owner and operator. Dean became president of the association in 2015 and has worked with the leadership team to advocate for the assisted living association while helping the organization expand its membership and education opportunities throughout the state.
Beverly Dix McHugh
Susan Morris, current NCSLA Secretary, has been a long-time member of the organization since 1977 in District 2 from Spencer-Mocksville, NC. Susan has served as a key leader in many admirable positions on the NCSLA Executive Board and several committees (Board of Continuing Education, Convention, Hospitality, Planning & Steering, Joint State Training), Domiciliary Care Administrator Preceptor since 1987 and District 2 Vice President from 1985-1997. She also has held a seat on the Board of Directors for the National Assisted Living Risk Retention Group since 2010.
Morris established Morris Investment Properties while serving as a licensed administrator since 1974 and is the owner of Bethamy Enterprises (Bethamy Retirement Center, Bethamy Retreat and Magnolia Place). She has experience in pharmacology & gero-psychiatry, as an Activity Director, Serve Safe, Reiki Master II, Natural Health Professional and a certified EMT. Susan received her formal education from Biscayne Southern College, Rowan Technical College and NC State.
Additionally, Morris upon her many successful openings of assisted living facilities admirably established SidMor Fabrication Company, purchased Chicken & Oyster Shack Restaurant and founded NC Museum of Toys, Dolls & Miniatures. Susan is the recipient of many distinguished awards such as multiple Membership Awards, District 2 Advertising Award, Peer Review Award, Associate Membership Award and President’s Appreciation Award. During her free time, Susan is an avid golfer and is an activity member of many service clubs and church member in her community.
Carlos Garcia, current NCSLA Treasurer, has been a long-time member of the organization from Summerfield, NC. He has overseen the annual Convention and Trade Show for the association for years. Garcia's experience and passion for the industry brings incredible enthusiasm and energy to everything around him. His leadership qualities have been respected and appreciated within the association.
Hermitage Retirement Center
John Leandro, current NCSLA Past President, has been a long-time member of the organization since 1977 in District 5 from Raeford, NC. John has served as a key leader in many admirable past positions as former President, Vice President, Vice President of District 5, first Chairman of the Peer Review Committee and Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee. He also dedicates his time, talents and leadership to several diverse community, church and charity organizations in his area.
Leandro served in the US Army and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. While serving his country in Vietnam, John received several awards and decorations: two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Bronze Star Medals, forty-six Air Combat Medals, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Palm, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Currently, Leandro operates Hermitage Retirement Center of Rockingham and serves on the Board of Directors at Integrity Senior Living Properties.
Jeff Horton retired from NC state government in July 2017 after nearly 30 years of state service. He became the Executive Director of the Association in August of 2017. He is a graduate of East Carolina University where he earned both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees and has worked over 33 years in the health care arena including work in the private and public sector as a direct care provider in both inpatient and outpatient settings. During his time in state government, he worked as a health care regulator and with the North Carolina Medicaid program. From his many years of experience working in the health and human services field, Jeff has a broad perspective and working knowledge of regulatory, Medicaid policy and reimbursement, aging and other issues affecting the assisted living industry.

Director of Education
Beth Oakley joined NCSLA in April 2016 as Director of Education and is responsible for the coordination of all continuing education programs and training. Beth has more than 30 years of experience in leadership, management, marketing and training and development. Among her recent positions, Beth served as Training and Development manager for Liberty Healthcare of North Carolina. Prior to that, she worked as a Project Manager with the Duke Reading Center, serving as liaison with clinical research organizations in the area of ophthalmology. She also worked as Community Health Program Director for Prevent Blindness North Carolina, overseeing the administration of specific community health vision screening programs, fundraising events and community outreach. A graduate of Peace College, Beth also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education from UNC-Greensboro.
